What is Fast Fashion? How are we Different?
At Ruby & Poe, we provide a more ethical, higher-quality alternative to the disposable waste of “fast fashion.” To us, and to the many new parents who love our products, the reasons for this seem self-evident. However, to better understand why we do what we do and what’s going on in the world around us, it’s often helpful to take stock of our values and what we stand for - and against.
What is “fast fashion?”
“Fast fashion” is a contentious and controversial topic, especially in the world of clothing for babies and small children. But what is it, exactly?
In short, fast fashion represents an approach to the design, manufacturing, and marketing of apparel that prioritizes cheapness and speed. From this perspective, because babies and children will only wear their clothes for a brief period of time, it makes business sense to make as many of them as possible, with low investment, and sell them on the cheap, jumping on fly-by-night trends, exploiting labor (including child labor), and assuming the products end up in the garbage before they deteriorate.
This approach has made some companies wealthy and successful, but at what cost?
Why it matters!
First, early childhood may only represent a brief period of time in the lives of new parents and their children, but these years are some of the most important. Research showed that infancy was a critical period in life, setting the foundation of long-term health and reduced risk for chronic diseases. Although it seems trivial, young children's clothing contributes to many health concerns as it touches your baby’s skin directly. Baby’s skin seems so beautiful and perfect however they are extremely delicate. Their immature skin barrier is what makes their skin so vulnerable to daily outside attacks. Fiber, dyes and all components that are used to make babies’ clothing can either protect or be the cause of so many skin problems and chemical compounds that may affect their long-term health. Children need clothing that is comfortable, safe for their skin, and to sleep and to play. And, just as important for their health they need clothing that is environmentally safe. They need clothes that are durable, made to last and can be passed down to other children when it is outgrown.
Second, every parent knows that our children pick up on our attitudes. This is when values and perspectives of the world begin to take form. The early experiences of babies and children help determine who they’ll be in the world, and what role they’ll take in becoming responsible global citizens in a world that increasingly depends on us to be ethical and compassionate. When we compromise our ethics, the whole world is affected, starting with the people closest to us. If we dress our children in cheap clothes created by exploiting child labor, the grim irony is inescapable.
Our responsibility to humanity begins at home - and that means making sure we raise our children with the sorts of sustainable practices we want to see proliferate throughout society.
