Cherry Saraswati was born and raised on the island of Bali in Indonesia, and now lives between Bali and Los Angeles. She attended Loyola Law School in Los Angeles where she received her L.L.M. degree, but ultimately decided against a career in international law to pursue what she felt would be the much more creatively rewarding. She followed her heart and began her journey in the field of planet friendly entrepreneurship. Driven by this fierce passion she established Ruby & Poe is an eco-friendly, plant-based, ultra-low-impact, baby and mother apparel company that sees education as a central part of its mandate.
Growing up loving the outdoors, she is a dedicated surfer and backcountry hiker who has explored both waves and natural environs around the globe. This immersion in the natural world has led her to a deeply eco-conscious and low imprint philosophy, while her bi-continental and bi-cultural background, rooted as it is in both an ancient traditional culture and the modern world, has afforded her a unique globally conscious perspective. Now as a young mother fully aware of the world that her daughter is inheriting, her concerns about our mindful stewardship of the planet, its resources, and its limits, have only deepened.
Cherry believes that it is every child’s fundamental right to inherit a livable planet, and that it is our responsibility to uphold and protect that right. She envisioned a sustainable company that could incorporate both the traditional techniques she had seen growing up in Indonesia, and the forward-thinking environmental consciousness she had absorbed in her travels. As a result, every step of Ruby & Poe’s production process has been carefully overseen to deliver an absolute minimum of waste and wholly handmade product that comes directly from our fields and factory to your home. All Ruby & Poe’s products are made from 97% Tencel™ modal and lyocell, fibers that originate from the renewable raw material wood, created by photosynthesis. The certified biobased fibers are manufactured using an environmentally responsible production process. The fibers are certified as compostable and biodegradable, and thus can fully revert back to nature.
Cherry realizes that along with textiles dyes, fashion industries is one of the most polluting industries, producing up to 1.2 billion tons of CO2 per year. and the toxicity of the chemical used in clothing has been proven to put humans and the environment at greater health risk. Some of these toxic chemicals is found to penetrate through skin and bioaccumulate. At newborn phase, infant’s skin barriers are naturally weaker, makes them more vulnerable to infection as well as chemical exposures. This means that if a newborn exposed to the same level of substance as an adult, they may absorb much more of that substance. This is why Ruby & Poe only uses naturally occurring plant dyes derived from the locally sourced flora of Indonesia. Plant dyes are renewable, biodegradable and eco-friendly. It is non-toxic, contains no carcinogenic substance that causes health problems. Many natural dyes also contain antimicrobial properties which make it perfect for baby’s sensitive skin.
With a clean unfettered ergonomic design paired with a painstaking hands-on process, Ruby & Poe takes great pride in creating super soft, non-toxic, vegan clothing that will have both you and your baby feeling great, inside and out.
In supporting Ruby & Poe, you will be participating in a larger action that not only champions women’s and children’s empowerment, but also in taking a stand in fighting for our planet’s future. Ruby & Poe dedicates a portion of all proceeds to youth education with an emphasis on environmental awareness.
